DONAGHMOYNE WIN THEIR SIXTH ULSTER TITLE

Donaghmoyne 1-14  Glenfin (Donegal) 0-4

Donaghmoyne clinched their sixth Ulster Club Senior championship title with an impressive win over Donegal champions Glenfin. After losing out to Termon in last years Ulster decider, Donaghmoyne were going to make sure history didn’t repeat itself, and by half time, Donaghmoyne were in a commanding lead, leading 1-6 to 0-3. However it was the Donegal champions who took the lead, with Yvonne Mc Monagle converting 2 frees, the first an excellent effort outside the 45metre line. But Catriona Mc Connell settled Donaghmoyne with a point after 11 minutes and Hazel Kingham levelled matters shortly after. On the 16th minute Eileen Mc Elroy put Donaghmoyne into the lead. Then came the first goal of the game. Player of the match Cora Courtney delivered the pass to Catriona Mc Connell who turned and fired to the back of the net giving the Donegal goalie not chance whatsoever. That put Donaghmoyne 4 points up, but points from Joanne and Cora Courtney increased their lead. Yvonne Mc Monagle pulled one back for the Donegal side but with just 2 minutes to go to the break, Catriona Mc Connell converted a free to put 6 points between the sides . Half time score  Donaghmoyne 1-6   Glenfin 0-3

Within seconds of the restart, Cora Courtney added another point and 3 in a row from top scorer Catriona Mc Connell put Donaghmoyne in a commanding lead. Karen Guthrie pulled one back for Glenfin, but that was to be Glenfin’s final score of the game. It was all Donaghmoyne now, and  points from Hazel Kingham, Amanda Casey, Cora Courtney and Catriona Mc Connell wrapped up the scoring for the monaghan girls.

This was a fine display by the Donaghmoyne girls who are now looked on as one of the best teams in the country. They now play Connacht champions Cornacon. These sides have met before and like Donaghmoyne, Cornacon are a formideable force in ladies football. Both sides have abundant talent. Cora Staunton is the Mayo sides main scorer, but she will find Sharon Courtney and the Donaghmoyne defence hard to break. Fiona Mc Hale and Claire Egan are a very strong pair for Cornacon but they will meet their match in Amanda Casey and Cora Courtney. You wouldn’t be surpised to see the All Ireland champions coming out of next weeks semi. Donaghmoyne  haven’t really been tested yet and they cannot afford to hit the number of wides they did last weekend. But if they play to their full potential, there is no reason why they cant be looking at going for their 3rd All Ireland title. They also have the advantage of playing on their home ground. A game not to be missed if you want to see some of the top players in the country in action.

ULSTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Sperring Og (Tyrone) 3-5   Inniskeen 0-7

Sperring Og put an end to Inniskeen’s title  hopes

Inniskeen’s dream of winning another Ulster title ended on Saturday last, when they were beaten by an impressive Sperrin Og side. Inniskeen went into the game without their influential county player Isobel Kierans. This proved to be a big loss for the Inniskeen girls who never really played to their potential, and a disallowed goal for the Inniskeen girls in the second half proved to be the turning point of the game.

It was Inniskeen who were first on the scoreboard when Abby Duffy converted a free. Both sides pushed forward with Sharon Mc Gahon defending excellently for the Inniskeen girls. A fine move involving Tyrone star Eimear Teague found Shauneen Ferrity who was fouled. The resulting free by Amy Mc Cullagh was deflected over the bar by Fiona Callan to square matters up. Inniskeen responded almost immediately with the dangerous Voreen Quigley scoring a fine point to put Inniskeen in front once again and another point by Abby Duffy increased their lead. Excellent defending by Aisling Fox denied Inniskeen going further ahead, before Sperring Og pulled one back with Bronagh Warnock firing over the bar. Miriam Kelly was denied what looked like a certain goal when her shot was well saved by Peggy Myles. Once again it was Voreen Quigley who added another for Inniskeen to put Inniskeen 2 up. Indeed any time Voreen got the ball she was causing all sorts of problems for the Sperrin Og defence. Sperring Og continued to press forward, and their efforts were rewarded when the excellent Kim Mc Cullagh scored the first goal of the day to put the Tyrone champions ahead for the first time. Inniskeen responded almost immediately when Voreen Quigley found Roisin Mc Kenna whose shot went over the bar to square matters up once again. Sperrin Og’s Laura Heagney and Midfielder Shauneen Ferrity both had to go off injured. This looked very worrying for the Tyrone girls but they seemed to up their game and a great individual run by the excellent Laura Lee Mc Cullagh found Briege Beggs whose shot came off the crossbar. Sperrin Og’s Louise Mc Dermott was quickest to react, and fired to the net to put Sperring Og 3 clear. Inniskeen to their credit bounced back but excellent defending by the Sperring Og girls kept them at bay. However, just on the stroke of half time, Voreen Quigley hit the target  once again to leave just 2 points between the teams going into the break.

Sperring Og continued where they left off in the first half, with Laura lee Mc Cullagh causing Inniskeen all sorts of problems with her surging runs forward. They were unlucky not to add goal number 3 with Amy Mc Cullagh’s shot just off target. Substitute Niamh O Neill added another point for Sperring Og to put a goal between the sides once again. Then came the turning point of the game. A high ball into the Inniskeen full forward line saw the Sperring Og goalie come off her line. She seemed to collide with the incoming Voreen Quigley who managed to fire to the net. The referee consulted with her umpire, with the result being the goal was disallowed. This proved a very harsh decision for the Inniskeen girls. Abby Duffy did convert a free soon afterwards, but an excellent sideline free by 15 year old Niamh O Neill, put 3 points between the sides once again. Miriam Kelly was then sin binned for Inniskeen and this seemed to dash whatever hopes Inniskeen had of making a comeback. Another great shot by Niamh O Neill was well cleared by Fiona Callan but then a high dipping shop by Kim Mc Cullagh dropped just under the crossbar to put Sperrin Og 3-4 to 0-7 ahead. Another excellent point by Briege Beggs put the game beyond doubt. With the extra player, Sperring Og held out, and try as they might Inniskeen just couldn’t find a way back.

There was great jubilation among the Sperrin og team as the final whistle blew. It was very disappointing for the Inniskeen girls, who had been very impressive all year. Isobel Kierans was a big miss, but that disallowed goal will prove a talking point for a long time. Had it been allowed Inniskeen would have found themselves right back in the game. As it was, they were always playing catch up, and then going a player down, it was too big a mountain to climb.

However, Sperrin Og despite losing some influential players through injury never gave up and their efforts were rewarded with an Ulster title.

It was great to see the number of players attending and this augurs well for our U14 county team next year.
