O-35: Monaghan Harps recreational team beat Keady in very competitive shield final in Truagh on Saturday last. The Harps started slowly and only for the early interventions of Séamus McManus and Brendan Buckley to snuff out many of the early Keady attacks, this game could have been out of sight. However, a reshaped defence eventually took control and the game was level at half-time. In the second half, the Harps showed the importance of having able replacements for every position and pushed home their advantage to win by five points on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-6. While the whole team showed great character, there were very impressive performances from captain Martin Sheridan, Man-of-the-Match Séamus Brannigan, Hugh McKenna and Brendan Buckley in defence, which where equally matched by the forward play of Ciarán Cuddy, Dessie McGarry and the Conlon brothers.
Panel: Séamus McManus, Dermot Brannigan, Martin Sheridan, Brendan Buckley, Hugh McKenna, Séamus Brannigan, Chris Conway, Niall Brannigan, Lorcan McAdam, Finbarr Conlon, Dessie McGarry, Jimmy Croarkin, Fergal Lambe, Roger McQuaid, Ciarán Cuddy, Paul Conlon, Damien O’Leary, Andrew Mullen.
U-14: Hard luck to our Under-14 Division Five team, who lost away to Emyvale in the league semi-finals last Friday. Our lads trailed by 1-3 to 1-2 after en evenly-matched first quarter, where James Owens (1-1) and David Lowry got our scores, but Emyvale pulled away in the second quarter to lead by 3-5 to 1-3, with David getting our only point. Two points from James Owens and one by James Bourke, as well as some excellent play by Evan Cudden, brought our lads back into it in the third period, but our only point of the final quarter was a Niall McManus free, allowing Emyvale to secure a 4-9 to 1-7 win. Thanks to the panel and the management team, led by Brendan Burns, for their efforts this year.

Sponsored walk: The juvenile club’s annual sponsored walk took place last Saturday. Thanks to all our young players who took part and everyone involved in organising it. That brings a close to our Saturday-morning coaching for the year, so thanks to everyone who helped out. A blitz is being planned for the next few weeks.
Hard luck: To the Monaghan ladies on their unfortunate All-Ireland final defeat to Cork last Sunday. Thanks to everyone who helped to put up flags in the town last week.
Handball: As the new season begins we welcome new players to the club. Coaching sessions will continue on Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm. However, please be advised that due to increasing membership we generally have to limit the number of newcomers. Competitions will begin shortly and, like last season, we expect some great matches. In October 2012, the World Handball Championships will be held in Ireland. Already we have a number of players interested in taking part and they are already in training in anticipation of competing against the top players.
Gavan Duffy Park: We were due to host the MFL Division Three Final last Saturday, but it was postponed. We are also due to host the Under-16 Hurling Championship Final between Clontibret and Truagh this Sunday at 12 noon. Our own senior ladies play Lisnaskea from Fermanagh in the Ulster Club IFC on Sunday at 2pm. We wish them the best of luck.
