Monaghan U14 Development Squad Leinster blitz in O ‘Hanrahan’s gaa club in County Carlow Saturday 16th July
On Saturday last Monaghan U14 Football development squad travelled down to Carlow for an U14 blitz organised by Leinster GAA. It was held in O’Hanrahan’s gaa club. Monaghan played two games, with each games consisting of two half’s of 20 minutes.
Our first game was against Wicklow. Monaghan started the game well with early scores from Owen McKearney and James Mealiff. Wicklow did settle into the game and hit back with two points. However Francis Hughes stepped up a minute later and rivalled home the ball to the back of the Wicklow net. More points from Aidan Ward and Conor Marry saw Monaghan in the driving seat until Wicklow hit 1-01 within 2 minutes. One minute before half time Owen McKearney stepped up and hit Monaghan’s second goal of the first half in impressive style.
The second half Monaghan picked up where they left off with three quick points from Aidan Ward (2points) and Owen McKearney (1point). Wicklow hit back with 4 unanswered points. Monaghan again picked it up a gear towards the end of the game with 1 point from Eoin McQuaid and 2 points from Conor Marry. Monaghan finished the game with a well struck penalty by Eoin McQuaid after a great individual effort by Owen McKearney to get the free.
Final Score: Monaghan 3-09 Wicklow 1-07
In the Second game Monaghan were up against a strong Wexford team who had beaten Carlow in the previous game by 1 point. Monaghan started the game well with 3 unanswered points, 2 by Aidan Ward and 1 by Andrew McPhillips. Unfortunately for Monaghan they were the only scores that we would score in the 1st half as Wexford dominated the game from then on. They finished the half with 3 -04.
In the second half Monaghan tried half but the lead by Wexford at half time left Monaghan with an uphill battle in the second half. Eoin McQuaid got Monaghan’s only score of the half as Wexford hit a further 1-06 in this half.
Final Score: Monaghan 0-04 Wexford 4-10
