McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

A gritty performance from our senior team saw them progress to the next round of the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship thanks to a 0-10 to 0-5 win against a determined Drumhowan side last Sunday evening (17th July). We started the game brightly and opened the scoring on the 1st minute when Fergal McGeough scored an absolutely stunning point. Drumhowan responded almost immediately when they pointed from play on the 3rd minute but we regained the lead a minute later when Mark Daly tapped over a free-kick. We forged further ahead on the 6th minute when Garry Calvert was hauled down and Stephen McGuirk coolly converted the free-kick and Paul McKeown extended our lead on the 13th minute when he cut inside his opponent and slotted over a lovely score to leave it 0-4 to 0-1. Drumhowan kicked a couple of wides before closing the gap on the 16th minute with a neat point from play but this was quickly cancelled out when Paul McKeown finished superbly after a sweeping move down the field involving Jamie Smith, Dwayne Rooney and Fergal McGeough. We stretched our lead on the 23rd minute when Stephen McGuirk converted a free-kick following a foul on Noel Carroll and with half time approaching Fergal McGeough scored two more fabulous points on the 28th and 31st minute to give us a 0-8 to 0-2 advantage at the break. When play resumed Drumhowan reduced the gap when they pointed on the 2nd minute and they managed to close the gap further when they scored another fine point on the 4th minute to leave it 0-8 to 0-4. We kicked wides on the 6th and  7th minutes and I imagine Jamie “the Dodger” Smith caused a few hearts to stop on the 8th minute when he fumbled a high ball on the goal line but thankfully he was able to rescue  the situation and clear his lines to calm everyone down! Drumhowan closed the deficit when they pointed on the 10th minute to leave three points separating the sides, 0-8 to 0-5. But we struck back immediately and managed to increase our lead on the 14th minute when Mark Daly pointed a free-kick after Paul McKeown was hauled to the ground and shortly afterwards Mark showed his accuracy again when he glided over another free-kick following a foul on Noel Carroll to leave the final score 0-10 to 0-5. Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

Our senior team was scheduled to play Drumhowan yesterday evening (Wednesday 20th July) in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate league campaign. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for all latest results and fixtures.  Their next outing in the league campaign is on Sunday 7th August when we travel to play Currin.

Parish Donation

As part of our ongoing support towards the community and parish we have generously decided to make a sizeable donation to the parish fund from the money collected on the gate at our family fun date out this Sunday 24th July. Therefore, by attending the vintage hay festival day you will not only be supporting the club but you will also be helping the parish so your attendance and contribution would be deeply appreciated and we look forward to seeing you there.

Sandwiches & Buns

They say “many hands make light work” and with our upcoming hay festival weekend fast approaching the club is looking for volunteers to offer a hand with all the preparations. Organising an event like this is not an easy task and one of the things we were hoping for some help was the making of sandwiches, buns and other lovely treats for the food hall. This was a very popular stand at last year’s festival so if any lady or gentleman is able and willing to make a pan loaf of sandwiches or make a couple dozen of buns then the club would truly like to hear from you. So please get in touch with myself on 086-1041165. Thank you.

Family Fun Day Out / Vintage Hay Festival

Our traditional hay festival will once again be the heart of a great day out and it takes place this Sunday 24th July at Dartrey sports field (just follow the signs). Last year was described in many quarters as the social event of the year and it was easy to see why as it captured the excitement and interest from all the village and surrounding areas with lots to do and see. This year’s lineup promises to be equal with an action packed itinerary of events starting with a poultry sale and car boot sale at 10am.  Later that day (12 noon, onwards) you will be able to see working horses, vintage tractors & machinery, blacksmith, live traditional music, Irish dancing, dog shows, a pet corner, sheep shearing, tossing the sheaf, penalty competitions, tug-of-war, kids races, bouncing castles, golf pitching, throw-the-wellie, archery, tractor reversing and loads more.

This day is truly a recipe for a special occasion which will hopefully cast away the bankers and bond holders for a while with the laughter of children having fun and enjoying themselves, the warmth of families and the closeness of friendship. The only way to be part of this occasion is to be there this Sunday 24th July. AND REMEMBER KIDS ARE FREE. Let’s hope the sun will be shining brightly!

Vintage Land Drainage / Trenching Machine

Roll up, roll up, the very first land drainage / trenching machine ever used in this country will be doing a demonstration at this year’s hay festival. This strange looking machine has not been used in over fifty years and they certainly don’t make them like this anymore and will definitely bring back memories of draining the land years ago. So make sure you don’t miss out and be there to see this one in a lifetime opportunity.

Car Treasure Hunt

As part of our weekend of festivities all you treasure hunt fans will be delighted to hear that we are holding a car treasure hunt on Saturday 23rd July. Thomas McCormick has generously decided to set the route which will take you on some of the most interesting and scenic areas of the village and surrounding areas and will certainly test your navigation skills along with your ability to solve cryptic clues.  So you will have plenty to look forward to so get those motors revved up. The treasure hunt will start from our GAA carpark (located on the Monaghan Road, Rockcorry) at 4pm and the last car leaving will be 5.30pm. The entry fee is €20 per car, which consists of a maximum of four people, including the driver) with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

Superheroes v Villains

We all love superheroes Superman, Batman, Batgirl (my favourite!), Spiderman, Mr. Incredible to name but a few but on the other hand we also have a soft spot for the poor villain namely The Joker, The Goblin and The Penguin. This Saturday evening there will be plenty of caped crusaders and masked villains on show when they take part in our very first fancy dress football match between the Superheroes v Villains. That’s right folks, fancy dress. All players will be kitted out in their favourite superheroes or villains fancy dress costumes for this epic encounter. I understand the team captains have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks recruiting characters, both male and female, to be part of their teams and no doubt will  be one of the most egg-citing adventures of the weekend. Do the superheroes have what it takes? Will the superheroes have enough passion & skill? Will the superheroes use their special powers and beat the villains to save the day? The only way to find out is to tune in this Saturday 23rd July and the game has a throw-in time of 8pm.

BBQ

If the aroma of sizzling sausages, grilled steaks and juicy beef burgers causes your taste buds to tingle then make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd July as the club is holding a barbeque in St. Mary’s Hall.

On Tuesday 26th July the minor team travels to play Killanny at 7.45pm in the GRM minor football league.

Our under 14 team suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of a strong and determined Killeevan team last Sunday morning. Their next outing is on Saturday 13th August when they take on Drumhowan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and the game has a throw-in time of 12.00 noon.

Under 12 Team

The next outing for our under 12 team is this Saturday 23rd July when they travel to play Aghabog and the game has a throw-in time of 12 noon.
