SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP REPORTS

Truagh V DonaghmoyneSaturday 24th June

On Saturday evening last, reigning senior champions Donaghmoyne put down a marker for the other clubs with a resounding win over Truagh in their round 1 game in the Senior championship . Donaghmoyne played against the wind in the first half , but they got off to a great start with a goal from Lisa Kingham. With Catriona Mc Connell in America, pressure was on the forwards to step up to the mark, and  this they did with a very impressive display of point scoring throughout. Lisa Kingham added 3 points to her goal and further points from Amanda Casey, Hazel Kingham, Cora Courtney and Niamh Mc Carthy kept Donaghmoyne in front.Truagh battled well with Caoimhe Mohan scoring 4 of their five points  and Rachel Mc Kenna scoring the other.Barbara Mc Kenna was excellent in goals for Truagh and her display in goals kept Truagh in the game in the first half. Just on the break, Eileen Mc Kenna was sin binned leaving Truagh a player down. Going into to break Truagh were only 5 points down with the scoreline

Donaghmoyne 1-7  Truagh 0-5

However the second half saw Donaghmoyne do what they do best. Playing with the wind and with an extra player for the first 10 minutes, they put on a display of fast attacking football which proved difficult to counteract .9 players in total got their names on the scoresheet.  If anyone had any doubts about Donaghmoyne’s hunger to win another title, then last Saturday would have given them the answer they were looking.

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Friday 24th June 2011 Inniskeen            V             Donaghmoyne

It was an evening only fit for ducks, as the rain pelted down in bucketfulls, nevertheless the game did proceed. Scores were hard to come by as conditions were so poor, mistakes were very evident and balls were being mishandled all over the pitch. The first score came in the 10th minute from Donaghmoyne curtsey of a free put over the bar by Karen Hall,  minutes late Inniskeen leveled matters with a fine point from Julieann Finnegan, another 10 minutes went by before the next score from the boot of Inniskeens Roisin Mc Kenna and another point for Inniskeen followed just before half time from Corner forward Bronagh Duffy – this left the half time score

Inniskeen 0-3   Donaghmoyne 0-1

The weather did not improve any after half time ,and the game continued much in the same way, with Donaghmoyne getting the first score a point from Karen hall in the 7th Minute. Inniskeen cancelled this out when the ball went up the other end of the field just after and Roisin Mc Kenna pointed. Sometime later Inniskeen secured a free and Linda Callan stepped up to put it firmly over the bar. Inniskeen added another point in the 20th minute this time from Miriam Kelly .Then last score of the game, both teams worked hard throughout but the conditions were terrible and did not make for an entertaining game. Latton  V Emyvale B Sunday 26th June 2011

Latton got their championship campaign off to a great start with a win over Emyvale B. Emyvale went into this game with 5 of their starting 15 unavailable and they struggled to get into the game in the first half. Diane Dempsey was in fine scoring form having just returned from her honeymoon scoring 3-7 in the first half. Emyvale tried to pull themselves back into contention, but 3 points from frees from Orla Mc Kenna was all they could manage in the first half. Lavina Connolly,Eileen Black and Shauna Coyle all added to Diane’s total to put Latton in a very commanding position at half time.

Half time – Latton 4-10   Emyvale 0-3

Emyvale began to get to grips with the game in the second half and a little bit of self belief started to come into the players. They started to put pressure on the Latton defence with Catriona Mc Kenna taking the lead showing great determination. She was rewarded with a great goal which seemed to put some life into the Emyvale girls. Her younger sister Edwina added a second to narrow the gap. Alana O Donohue added 2 further points but Latton responded with points from Lavina Connolly, Maria Lavelle, Diane Dempsey and Eileen Black. The last 5 minutes saw Alana O Donohue hit the nets twice  to reduce Latton’s lead even further. However Diane Dempsey added another 2 points to leave the final score

(D3) U14-11 a side final…..Monday 20th June

Magheracloone V         St Brigids

On a dry but bitterly cold evening, a great display of juvenile football was on offer in the U14 – 11 a side final Division 3 final played in Aughnamullen.  With a wonderful turnout of parents and fans alike this was a very exciting game from start to finish.

Less than a minute of play was recorded when Magheracloones Lorraine Lambe headed towards goal but overcarried the ball, the resulting kickout found its way back in again towards the St Brigids goals and Magheracloones Naoise Brennan sent it over the bar.

A fine shot on goal by the St Brigids Ciara Shepard was saved by the M/clone keeper.

St Brigids now pointed from Michaela Mc Cabe with a fine solo run up the field and directly from the kickout, Magheracloone Lorraine Lambe was at hand to pass to Naoise Brennan who sent it over the bar for the second score for Magheracloone.

In the 8th minute Magheracloone backs were under serious pressure to keep the ball from getting into the net when St Brigids had 3 great chances, but eventually it went out for a 45 – st Brigids Michaela Mc Cabe pointed from the 45.

The pressure now switched to the St brigids defence , but they held firm and eventually Magheracloone Naoise Brennan pointed from play, with the resulting kickout won by St Brigids and Ciara Shepard pointed.  Both teams were now guilty of wides and this was because of the good word done by both sets of defenders.

Just as time was nearly up for the first half M/clone Lorraine Lambe got the goal they had tried so hard for and this put some distance between the sides and they also added a point from Karla Lambe to leave the half time score at M/clone 1-3 St Brigids 0-3

The Second half had some brilliant displays of defending especially from M/clone Michelle Burns and also Sarah Counihan for St Brigids.  With only a minute of the second half gone M/clone Naoise Brennan gave a great pass to Lorraine Lambe to send the ball over the bar, M/cloone then had a couple of wides. In the 5th minute St Brigids Aoife Mc Bennett gave a great pass to sub Gemma Traynor to point. Then two minutes later M/clone Naoise Brennan pointed and straight after St Brigids pointed from Gemma Traynor again. Now M/clone defenders were under serious pressure but St Brigids Michaela M Cabe did eventually point in the 11th Minute.

Magheracloones Tori Carolan who now really started to get into the game  won the ball in midfield got her first point and followed this up with a goal two minutes later and Karla Lambe got another some minutes later. St Brigids did bring back a point with great work from Michaela Mc Cabe to lay the ball off to Aoife Mc Bennett  to point. St Brigids worked really hard now and were rewarded with a goal from Gemma Traynor, however Magheracloone had the final say when forst Tori Carolan pointed an in injury time Naoise Brennan pointed to leave the full time score at

Sean Mc Dermott’s V’s Aughnamullen

Aughnamullen 3-4 Sean Mc Dermott’s 7 -6

This highly entertaining and keenly contested Junior Championship match was a credit to both teams as they served up an exciting contest in extremely wet and cold conditions. The high standard of football served up by both sides augurs well for their future. Edel Sheridan pointed to open the home sides account after five minutes of play, a well taken goal by Catriona Hamilton opened a four point gap as the home side availed of the strong breeze but player of the match Kelsey Maguire struck with a point from play followed by a goal to level proceedings at the end of the first quarter. A Linda Hamilton pointed free kept the home side in front, but the outstanding Maguire’s second major was quickly followed by another minor and Yvonne Ward pointed to leave the visitors in control at the break. Aughnamullen 1-2 Seans 2-3.

Referee Noel Brady got proceedings underway and the visitors quickly added goals by Pamela Keely and Yvonne Ward, and Ward added a further point, but the home side came roaring back and a well taken goal by Mary Connolly was either side of points by Catriona Hamilton and Elaine Keenan. With only two majors separating the sides, Mary Connolly was unlucky not to reduce this to a single goal, however, Kelsey Maguire was unstoppable scoring her third goal and setting up Pamela Keely for another major.

Aisling Mc Garrell and Kelsey Maguire swopped points, and with five minutes remaining Mc Garrell struck for the homes sides third goal. But no denying the Sean’s ladies as Laura Kiernans pointed and a name to watch for in the future Kelsey Maguire had the final say with her fourth well taken goal of this keenly contested Junior Championship tie. For the victors Paula Mc Quaid, Laura Hagen, Yvonne Ward and Aoife Hagan lead by example throughout. While Catriona Hamilton, Edel Sheridan, Linda Hamilton and Mary Connolly showed best for the Aughnamullen Ladies.
