The Late Ned Markey
The death of Ned Markey has taken one our clubs true characters and whole hearted supporter. Ned spent a lifetime following the fortunes of Clontibret teams at all levels and was particularly proud of the achievements of recent years. Ned was not a fair-weather supporter nor did he keep his opinions to himself and could after be heard exchanging banter with rival supporters, yet he never fell out with anyone. For championship matches he would arrive with his flag and his shout “Come on Clontubbert” was sure to be heard above the din, often interspersed with advice to the referee such as “You’re wrong there Ref”. For championship matches at O’Neill park Ned would always arrive in good time to help out and in recent years had made the management of the low gate his own speciality.
Ned would have been particularly proud of the turn out of present and past players officials and supporters who formed a Guard of Honour as his remains were carried into St Marys Church last Tuesday evening when if you listened closely enough you could almost hear the faint echo of Come on Clontubbert as he passed by. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
