MONAGHAN SENIORS LADIES OPENING CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST ARMAGH WILL BE THE CURTAIN RAISER TO THE MONAGHAN MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST TYRONE
Monaghan ladies opening game in the Ulster championship will now take place as the curtain raiser to the men’s opening championship game against Tyrone on Sunday 5th June. Their opponents are Armagh and this should be a great opportunity for all football supporters to come out and support both our county teams. The girls have been training away in preparation for this big game and a number of challenge games have been arranged during the coming weeks.
One of our most influential defenders on the senior county team, Christine Reilly is taking a little break from the football scene as she heads off to get married. Christine has been in superb form all year but you will be glad to hear that she will be back, rearing to go for the championship. On behalf of the county board we wish Christine the very best of luck.
Minors
The minor girls play their final game of the championship this Saturday against Cavan. Unfortunately they won’t qualify for the finals but it would be nice to finish off the year with a win. No venue has been confirmed as yet but we take this opportunity to wish them the very best of luck.
U16s
On Wednesday evening last our U16 team made up for their disappointing result against Tyrone, with a win over Down. This result now means that if they beat Antrim in their final game, they are guaranteed a place in the Ulster final, as the Tyrone/Donegal game ended in a draw. This is no more than this team deserve. Due to the upcoming exams there will be a break until their next game but training will continue. Girls will be notified with details.
U14s
The county U14 A team travel to Mullingar this Saturday to take part in the All Ireland Blitz. It is also hoped that the B team will take part. They are currently on a reserve list. Their participation will depend on other teams withdrawing. We wish our A team the very best of luck and lets hope they will be joined by our B team.

FLAG DAY
This Saturday May 14th, Monaghan ladies county board are holding their annual Flag Day. There will be collections in Emyvale, Clones, Ballybay, Castleblayney and Carrickmacross. All monies collected will go towards Monaghan ladies football. We ask that you support our collectors on Saturday.
Abbey Fanning memorial 7 a Side Tournament
Sponsored by the Squeling Pig Bar
Hosted by Monaghan Harps ladies on
Saturday 11th June 2011
Proceedings will begin at Gavan Duffy Park, Rooskey, Monaghan Town on Saturday the 11th of June at 10:00a.m. Following on from the success of last year, we are hoping to achieve the full quota of 16 teams in the 2011 competition.
Any teams wishing to participate please contact Jennifer Treanor on 086 8773447 as soon as possible, as places in this competition are on a first come first served basis secured by your clubs entry fee of €60/£60.
Ten players only are permitted on each panel, to be named at registration on the morning of the 11th of June. Following the initial round robin games, the top 2 teams in each group will enter into the cup competition and the bottom 2 teams will enter the shield competition. Therefore, if the full quota of 16 teams is reached, every team is guaranteed a minimum of 4 games prior to the knock out quarter final stages.
Each referee will select a player of the match for each game played on the day. These results will be collected following each game. The player with the highest number of votes will receive the cup and shield players of the tournament. Sharon Courtney of Donaghmoyne won the Shield Player of the Tournament in 2010 and Nicola Fahy of Emyvale won the Cup Player of the Tournament in 2010.
Last year, Emyvale won the Squealing Pig sponsored Abbey Fanning Memorial Cup at the sun drenched Monaghan Harps GAA Club in Gavan Duffy Park, Rooskey. In the final they defeated hosts Monaghan Harps 2-4 to 1-4. Donaghmoyne who had won the cup competition for the previous six years won the shield tournament in 2011 with a 1-11 to 0-3 victory over Aghabog. So last years Cup Winners Emyvale and Shield Winners Donaghmoyne will be hoping to be in the title race again this year but there are 14 other teams who on the day could take home some silverware.
So onwards and upwards for the Monaghan Harps Ladies Annual Abbey Fanning Memorial 7 a Side Tournament. Hopefully even more teams will enjoy participating in this competition which all of the Monaghan Harps Ladies have great pride and honour in running and hosting, in memory of Abbey, our team mate who is gone but not forgotten.
