Emyvale GAA Club Notes for Thurs. 19th May

First Ever Team in Emyvale:- First official reference to a team in Emyvale comes from a minute of a 1914 Ulster Council meeting, when they applied for two Aughnacloy players, one of them a teenage Tommy Taylor, who, 20 years later, would win a Dr. Mc Kenna Cup medal when playing in goals for Monaghan against Armagh in 1935.  A team had been formed in 1913, and played a friendly 10-a-side with Monaghan Harps in mid-summer with this team:- Frank Callaghan, JJ McKenna, Tommy Taylor,  J. O’Brien,  Tracey,  Curley,  McGorman, J.Clerkin, Hagan and Ml. McKenna.  Harps won 1-1 to 0-1 in a game thus described by the ‘Anglo-Celt’:-

‘The game was played in Monaghan;  there was a large attendance with crowds travelling from far and near to see the game’, and then added  ‘it was both fast and scientific’.  A return game was played in Emyvale shortly afterwards and this team took part in a ‘North Monaghan League’, which also included  Clones, Magherarney, Ture, Tullycorbett, Roslea and Greenan’s Cross.  Founder of the club was a Fr. J. J. McManus, CC  in Corracrin from 1910 to 1915.  The team was very active in Junior competitions in 1918 and 1921 and was senior in 1923 when it finished 5th in a 7-team North Monaghan Senior Football League (and Championship).

The ‘Anglo-Celt’ in its issue of Aug. 11th 1923 reports a County. Board meeting at which Emyvale was represented by Patrick Smyth  NT, who then resided next door to the present Post Office.   The ‘Celt’ also added this information:-

‘An Emyvale delegate said his team travelled to Clones on July 29th, but there was no team to meet them.  The secretary (P. Coyle) said he sent verbal notice of  postponement.   It was decided that two matches be played to make good the loss of Emyvale and to re-fix matches with Clones for Sept. 9th and 16th.’

In its issue of Sept. 24th 1923, the ‘Anglo-Celt’ records that Emyvale defeated Newbliss, while in its issue of  Nov. 3rd, it publishes the North Monaghan League (and  SFC):-
