Match of the Weekend
Clontibret v Ballybay in the Drumlin Group of Credit Unions Senior League, which will take place at O’Neill Park this Sunday at 5pm, has been designated Match of the Weekend, which for older patrons will evoke memories of a football rivalry that began in the 1950s. In that decade from 1954 to 1959 Clontibret and Ballybay played in five county finals, two of which went to replays. Ballybay won in ’54, Clontibret in ’55 and ’56 while Ballybay won after replay in ’57 and ’59. (Clontibret beat Donaghmoyne in the ’58 final) Two of the stalwarts of those finals Jim O’Hanlon and Benny Mone were inducted into the County Monaghan Hall of Fame earlier this year and hopefully will be present to cheer on their modern day counterparts on Sunday.
