Truagh Notes

By michael Tue 29th Mar

Seniors: We claimed a local derby win our neighbours Scotstown at St. Mellans on Sunday last on a deserved scoreline of 3-9 to 2-6. We were the stronger team in a quiet first half yet were only ahead at half time by 2 points, 0-6 to 1-1. The Scotstown goal came in the 16th minute against the run of play as we were ahead 0-5 to 0-1 at this stage, with our scores coming from Christopher McKenna, Padraig McKenna, Sean McKenna, Damian Mcrory and Niall Coyle. Christopher McKenna added a further point from free in the 22nd minute to end the low scoring first half. The second half improved and was a lively half with many goals. Scotstown started their comeback with a point before we were awarded a penalty when Damian McRory was fouled in the area in the 37th minute. Mark Counihan scored the resultant penalty and Niall Coyle followed quickly with his second of the game to put 5 points between the sides with 20 minutes remaining. The visitors overturned this deficit in the space of 5 minutes, scoring 1-2 to take the lead for the first time in the game. It was a short lived lead however, as Mark Counihan responded immediately with a goal for Truagh in the 48th minute. Christopher McKenna scored from a 45m place kick to bring the lead to 3 points in the 51st minute. Scotstown reduced this to 2 points a minute later before Padraig McKenna scored a mighty point in the 55th minute to restore the 3 point advantage. The game was then put to bed when Christopher McKenna capped a fine performance with a goal in the last minute to give Gaeil Triucha the 2 points.
