Emyvale GAA Club Notes for Thurs. 6th Jan
Handball: Darren Doherty travelled to San Diego, California last week as part of the Irish Team to represent his club, county and country in the US National Junior 15 & Under Boys Singles Championship. There were 32 boys entered in this competition and Darren sailed through the first three rounds quite comfortably. In the semi-final he met Galen Riordan from Wexford and Darren knew this would be his first stiff test. Darren went behind 10 – 0 in the first game but then found his rhythm and went on to win on a score line of 21 – 14, 21 – 7 to secure a place in the final against Tyler Stoffel from the US. These two players had met in the final of the World Championships and Darren was aware that Tyler’s game had improved immensely since that time so he knew he must play at his best to win the title. And this he did winning on a score line 21 – 8, 21 – 10. He put on a great display showing all the skills of the game.
Partnered by Killian Carroll, Mallow, Co. Cork he took part in the Boys 17 & Under Doubles Competition. There were 16 teams taking part in this competition and they reached the final where they met a pair from the US. Unfortunately this game was played immediately after Darren had won his singles final and they were beaten but they did take it to a tie-breaker.
We congratulate Darren on winning another major title. It’s not very long since he picked up an All Star Award in Croke Park as well as a National and World Titles. Everyone in Emyvale GAA Club is very proud of him and his achievements and we salute him and his coach and mentor Peter Larkin. Only for Peter’s coaching, Darren would never have reached the heights he has.
Congratulations: To Barry Mc Donald and his new wife Caroline who got married over the holidays.
