Doohamlet GFC Notes
After the holiday break our weekly GAA notes returns and a number of topics to be revealed.
First of all congratulations to Ollie Hughes who wed his lovely bride Grace Duffy over Christmas. A great day was had by all and we wish the happy couple many years of happiness together.
Also congratulations to Shane McManus and Ciara Loughman who announced their engagement over the festive period. Certainly romance is in the air around Doohamlet.
League Final: Our Intermediate League final eventually took place last week and Doohamlet came out on the wrong end of a 1-10 to 1-08 scoreline. With all the postponements and deferred dates for this game our momentum was well and truly gone and an historic double eluded us in the end. The players are currently enjoying a well deserved break and must be commended for all their efforts in 2010.
Fund Raising: Our weekly Blotto returns next week. P.J. Meehan and his hard working collectors will resume their weekly task of collecting envelopes. Jackpot currently stands at €9,400 and at only €2 per envelope is a magnificent prize.
Doohamlet club wish to thank all our contributors who loyally purchase Blotto tickets every week and as this is our main source of income is much appreciated. Blotto draw in the Spinning Wheel every Monday night and we thank Damian, Heather and Harry for their continued support.
Race Night: Our players are currently organising our annual Race Night which will be held in Connollys Lounge on Saturday 5th Feb beginning @ 9pm. Anyone wishing to sponsor a race or buy a horse/jockey can do so by contacting any player or committee member.
Mc Kenna Cup: Great to see some of our players being recognised for their efforts last season. Ted Duffy and Darren Connolly gave impressive displays for Monaghan in the Mc Kenna Cup last weekend.
A.G.M.: We held our A.G.M. in the Clubrooms on Tuesday evening last and a very sizeable attendance reviewed our past season. Although this was probably our most successful season ever on the field our meeting was tinged with sadness as we remember the sudden passing of P.J. Marray and Rosaleen Connolly earlier in the year. A minutes silence preceded the meeting in memory of all members who passed away in 2010.
Secretary Pat King gave a detailed report and reviewed our playing season which began on 6th February 2010 with an Ulster League game and finished on January 16th 2011 with our League final.
Doohamlet reached three finals last season and winning an historic Intermediate Championship being the highlight. He also paid tribute to Colin Walshe who established himself on the Monaghan Senior team and congratulated Ciaran McManus who won Intermediate Player of the Year and Colin Walshe who won Young Player of the Year.
Pat also paid tribute to Gerry McElroy our main sponsor and also Doohamlet Construction for their kind donations during the year.
Pat thanked all his fellow committee members and also our referees Gerry and Damian Malone and umpires and linesmen whose work is invaluable.
Youth Officer Michael McEneaney paid tribute to all his juvenile players who under extreme circumstances were a credit to themselves and their club. Winning an U14 double was a remarkable achievement after the untimely death of P.J. Marray and to see this team fight for every score in both the League and Championship and claim a double was a very fitting and just reward for their efforts.
To see Conor Marray lift the Championship Trophy to complete the Double in Div. 2 was a very poignant moment and will never be forgotten.
Our under 8’s and 10’s under the management of Bernie O’Neill, Marie Duffy, Noeleen McBennett, Jim Kelly and Joanne Loughman have enjoyed their first taste of competitive action with Go Games Blitzes at various venues and their appearance at halftime in the Intermediate Championship Final. Mickey also thanked all the parents who transported players from training and matches during the season.
Finance Officer Eamon Connolly and Development Treasurer P.J. Harte gave a very comprehensive report on the club finances and no need to tell anyone how difficult it is to keep a club in this current climate.
Chairman John Doran reviewed a very successful season and to see Doohamlet reach three finals was a credit to management and players. He also was very proud to see Doohamlet make a significant impact in the Ulster Club Championship playing at venues like Crossmaglen, Brewster Park and Breffni Park and had some regret that the arctic conditions that delayed the Ulster Final played a major role in the outcome of this game.
He was most disappointed with the treatment of our Junior B team who were prevented from playing their Junior B Semi Final by the CCC and this decision left a bitter taste. John also paid tribute to our Scor participants and also our young referees Andrew Casey and Shane Comiskey. He looked forward to another successful season in Senior ranks and thanked his fellow officers for their help.
