Under 14’s: Toome GAA hosted Magheracloone for their U.14 Division 2 Football League clash in sun drenched St Victor’s Park on Saturday last, where the home side gave an impressive display of their trademark fluid, possession football to take the honours against a very determined and sturdy Mitchell’s side, who had a number of excellent players and who kept the pressure on until the final whistle. Both teams showed high levels of skill and commitment throughout and served up an entertaining afternoon’s display. Toome’s precision combinations and greater forward accuracy on goal were significant factors in their supremacy –some of the scores were of an extremely high standard. Both clubs are to be commended on the high level of discipline on display by both teams and mentors.
Poacher turned gamekeeper, Toome’s John Gorman was excellent – he was in complete control of his goal area throughout; his kick outs were cleverly placed, and one of his blocks in particular, was quite exceptional. Kieran Blessing and Hugo Connolly (0.01) formed a solid, no – nonsense rearguard back line and further outfield, the steady Mickey Connolly, the ever vigilant Danny Friskey, (0.03), and the always methodical Frank Connolly were effective as a defensive unit and combined very well with the runners. The two mid fielders are continuing on from where they left off last year, – Aaron Kelly (1.03, 1, 45) gave a commanding performance, linking well and executing some excellent scores and Sean McMahon (0.07), apart from taking up a defensive role when needed, was also instrumental in setting up some fine attacks as well as helping himself to some quality scores.
The livewire and very talented half forward line of Mark McMahon (1.03), Ryan Murphy (2.02) and James Wilson (2.02) was a major thorn in the opposition’s side throughout and contributed more than half of their team’s total. Inside forwards, Conan McGovern and Ciaran McCooey (0.01) gave the opposing backs some anxious moments. Substitutes Luke Murtagh and Ryan McMahon competed well and also made their contribution.
Their next outing is away to Carrick on Tuesday 25th.
The game was well refereed by the very capable Mickey Conlon, Castleblayney.
